Another fallacy ingrained in the minds of most marketing managers is the belief that the better product will win the marketing battle.

Behind the thinking of many marketing managers is the thought that “truth will out.”

In other words, if you have the “facts” on your side, it’s only necessary to find a good advertising agency who can communicate those facts to the prospect and a good sales force that can close the sale.

We call this approach “inside-out thinking”- that somehow the advertising agency or the sales force can take the truth, as the company knows it, and use this truth to clear up the misconceptions that reside inside the mind of the prospect.

The single most wasteful thing you can do in marketing today is to try to change a human mind. Once a mind is made up, it’s almost impossible to change.

What is truth? Truth is the perception that’s inside the mind of the prospect. It may not be your truth, but it’s the only truth you can work with. You have to accept that truth and then deal with it.

While television advertisers are scrambling to conquer Tivo® and
get people to actually look at their ads, a new breed of fast
emerging media may be just what they’ve been looking for.

The new media that could save the day for advertisers looking to
recapture lost viewers is called “pixel ads”. Pixel ads are
found on web sites that sell micro-ads sized in 10 by 10 pixel
increments. The tiny ads are placed on the pixel ad site’s home
page and link to the web sites of the various advertisers.

Here is the domain of Pixel Bay (www.pixelbay.org) a leading US
based micro-ad site. Pixel based ads originally conceived of by
Alex Tew of the UK, became popular with the launch of Tew’s
Million Dollar Homepage (www.milliondollarhomepage.com) in early
September and catering to mainly European businesses and
consumers. But US based advertisers had nowhere to go until the
arrival of Pixel Bay.

While television and other so called mainstream media
advertisers are desperately trying to make ads that will be
watched by consumers at all, pixel ad sites like Pixel Bay and
MDH are literally attracting thousands of viewers daily who come
to their sites just to look at the ads.

In fact average visitors to PixelBay.org look at a minimum of 4
- 5 advertisers with each visit. In fact, some advertisers
report doubling their web site traffic in a matter of days along
with greatly increased sales.

The micro-ads are intriguing because of their small size.
Basically curiosity forces you to look at them and find out what
they are. This writer spent about 5 minutes per visit to each of
the above sites “pixeling” (hovering over and clicking on ads).
I bookmarked many of the sites and left the pages open so I
could go back and click ads I hadn’t seen yet throughout the
day. It’s totally addicting. I remember having a similar
addition when Tetris was released.

Pixel ads could also help many advertisers reach the coveted
echo-boomer generation who are notoriously cynical and averse to
advertising. Because of their “cute & cuddly” and off-beat
nature, pixel ads are an ideal vehicle to advertise to this
demographic.

Bob Cefail, Chairman of In Touch Media Group and creator of
PixelBay.org commented, “It’s a whirlwind,” referring to the
many advertiser calls In Touch has received. Cefail is also
surprised that, when visitors click on the advertiser’s ads,
“they are on these sites for hours. Already, the guys that
bought the first ads are reporting tremendous volume shifts.”

Echo-boomer, musician and rock blog owner Bishop Dolarhyde
commented: “…the flow of new traffic to my site stayed steady
with my 2,000 pixel block which is still ALOT smaller than your
average internet ad. No banner ad I have ever purchased, even at
MANY times the size, has out-performed Pixel Bay micro-ads. I’m
happy to say that about half of my traffic for the first week
came from Pixel Bay. I plan on buying more little blocks to
scatter on the page. I am excited about other creative ways I
can use these micro-ads to promote my site”.

in getting their ads really looked at and lots of fun for
consumers to explore. These micro-ads are the future of

A leader must project fearlessness in facing challenges. A leader must stand firm even in the presence of criticisms, but still having the courage to admit his mistakes.

An effective leader listens emphatically. He welcomes ideas and inputs from his members. This promotes consensus building within the team. He creates enough opportunities for open communication then he capitalizes on the ideas shared within the group but making sure that he provides recognition for these ideas. Though he places a high value on dialogue and feedback, he knows when to take action.

As a leader, he may often find himself with the dilemma of making or not making a decision. An effective leader, who is focused, authentic, courageous and emphatic, must also have the proper timing in making and executing decisions. If he gets the timing wrong on these critical decisions, all else stands to be nullified. It is his make or break. He must be able to prioritize and move with appropriate speed. A great leader uses time as his ally.

Probing into actual setups, the aforementioned attributes may translate into the following. A leader must have talent or specific skills at some task at hand. He must possess initiative, tied up with a certain degree of charisma that motivates and stirs people to motion. He has dedication - a service to a cause with a clear sense of mission. A leader is results-oriented, optimistic, and is of the belief that he has the ability to “make a difference”. He should also possess the ability to encourage people and foster growth in them. He must be a role model, someone who leads by example. Self-knowledge and self-awareness are also essential characteristics.

However, it does not necessarily follow that someone having these qualities may achieve success in leading. He must also learn to use these exemplary qualities to influence his members of diverse talents and characters to work together to achieve a common vision. What follows are some guidelines that may aid aspiring leaders on how to effectively influence and subsequently lead people.

Before one may lead, he must first understand the people who he will be leading. He must be able to see and understand his subordinates’ situation in their point of view. Try ” mirroring.” Observe how they act, speak and think. In the long run, the people you are mirroring will feel more comfortable with you as if actually seeing themselves in you.

Show genuine politeness. Be friendly. Make your subordinates feel how willing you are to extend assistance in case they would need it. This builds mutual trust within the group, which will promote a stronger team spirit.

Being pleasant and friendly does not always cut it. A leader must also provide compelling evidence that he can deliver. A leader must be able to concretize ideas and implement them. A good reputation is most important, so build one and maintain it.

A good leader inspires others to follow by setting an example. A leader sets the direction and strives to influence people to follow that direction. He must be a role model who adopts a persona that embodies his mission and vision, and is worthy of imitation.

Avoid doing most of the work. Delegate tasks. Involve and utilize the most important resources at hand - your people. But be sure to follow through on their progress. Be generous in praise and recognition. Appreciate all contributions, big and small.

There are numerous theories on leadership. Different leaders carry out their roles in a wide variety of styles, depending on the situation and circumstance. There are also various methods how leaders motivate and manage their people. But in the end, leadership is really all about faith, people and purpose. It is about having a vision, the faith that it can be done and the drive to enlist others in the pursuit of that purpose.

According to McNeil Nutritionals (Producers of Splenda), “Made from Sugar” means three chlorine molecules added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. This mixture causes a chemical reaction, then BLAM!–Splenda.

What I’m concerned about is that during the chemical reaction, the original sucrose molecule is grossly altered. It’s no longer sugar. Even though there initially was sugar in this equation, the sucrose no longer holds the same molecular qualities.

McNeil Nutritionals, though, couldn’t afford to tell the public that… so they called the product “Sucralose”. Which is a reminder that the sugar was once there.

What’s scary is that on the same token, they could have called Chlorinose–named after the OTHER chemical used in the production of the product. But I’m afraid that would not have helped sales.

I like to look at this type of marketing wizardly like this… The formula is simple:

1. Find a derivative of something natural.
2. Alter the heck out of it.
3. Change its name so it is not as ominous as it truly is.

Can you think of other examples? Sweet’N Low? Equal? MSG?

Similar to the creation of Splenda, a moldy tomato is derived from a previously ripe one… all that happens is a few chemical reactions and some bacteria take over. Would you eat a moldy tomato if it had a sticker on it that said “Made from a Ripe Tomato”!?! Would you eat it even if they called it something fancy like “Tomato du Fuz” or labeled them with the year it began to rot like a fine wine? Of course not.

We can even analyze it the opposite way–where something occurring naturally is made from chemicals that are bad for us. Would you eat table salt if it had a label on it that said “Made from Chlorine”. Probably not.

It’s all about marketing the product.

They doesn’t sell moldy tomatoes because they know nobody will eat them. And they couldn’t sell Splenda if they said “Made from Chlorine”… which in fact it is, because there are 3 chlorine molecules to every one sucrose molecule.

We are at a disadvantage because we cannot see the effects of the chemical reactions these molecules go through. We don’t bring microscopes to our diners to examine our packaged sweeteners to see what is really there… and even if we did, we’d have no idea what they’ve created for us to ingest.

We can see the effects of mold on a tomato. We know it is bad.

So here are some of documented effects and facts about Splenda. After you read them, hopefully you’ll know it is bad as well.

1. As of 2005, There have only been six human trials to date on Splenda. Not nearly enough to form a useful scientific opinion.

2. The longest trial lasted three months.

3. At LEAST 15% of Splenda is not excreted from your body in a timely manner.

4. Chlorine, though rarely occurring naturally, can create dangerous byproducts called dioxins (and other organochlorine compounds). These are hazardous to our bodies. Even if we are exposed to very low levels, dioxins remain in the body and accumulate. The EPA is now saying that this is soon to become a major health risk problem. The cumulative effects of dioxin in humans have been linked to birth defects, cancer, reproductive disorders and immune system breakdown.

Here are some more detailed medical effects:

1. Shrunken thymus (immune system) glands (up to 40 percent shrinkage)
2. Enlarged liver and kidneys.
3. Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus.
4. Increased cecal weight.
5. Reduced growth rate.
6. Decreased red blood cell count.
7. Hyperplasia of the pelvis.
8. Extension of the pregnancy period.
9. Aborted pregnancy.
10. Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights.
11. Diarrhea.

You might say these are extreme cases. That’s OK to think… but who knows?!!? There have only been SIX human trials.

I know of a chemical that has these particular side effects in very low doses… headache, drowsiness, vertigo, weak and rapid pulse, deep and rapid breathing, a bright-red color in the face, nausea and vomiting.

Sounds like the regular over the counter sinus medication, nothing harmless, right?

Wrong… it’s cyanide and it’s derived from nature as well.

Could your sweetener be bad for you? You bet.
