Ladies Events for Lazy Playing One of the touted virtues of ladies events at major poker tournaments is the idea that these events allow new players to enter the game in a comfortable environment. The idea is that women feel less threatened when facing a table of women than they would face a similar table full of men. The idea offered to many beginning online poker players is to have their first couple of rounds in a women’s event before graduating on to the real games. The underlying assumption is that a ladies event equals lazy playing. While it may seem a little rude to say, ladies events do tend to have lazy playing. Many of the players are used to playing in their little feminine cocoons that do not take into account the harsh reality outside the gender specific bubble. If you really want to improve your game, you will not be able to do so at the ladies events. These events are simply not competitive enough to foster real skills development. All you will learn at the ladies events is how to chat while you play and play nice with others. On top of all of those skills, you will also learn a whole lot of lazy poker playing skills.

Where Do Continuation Bets Work the Best? Not all kinds of betting techniques are appropriate for all poker tables. Nowhere is that more apparent than when discussing the continuation bet. This kind of bet, relying on a no limit Holdem poker game and a big bankroll is simply not appropriate for many poker tables. Even putting aside the fact that it needs a no limit poker online table (and therefore can only play on about half of the tables on the floor), a continuation bet will not fit in with the playing culture at certain casino enclaves. Take, for example, the low stakes tables. Low stakes tables, especially microstakes, are full of brand new poker players that wouldn’t know an Ace from an eight. They are just barely learning the basics of the game, and know almost no strategy. As a result, they tend to call every single round to stay in the game. Not a very effective strategy, I know, but it is what it is. A continuation bet will not work among the fish schools because they have not learned enough strategy to recognize it. You would be much better off taking your continuation betting skills to the medium stakes tables, where the players know just enough to realize when they should fold, but not enough to get the upper hand on you. Choose your table correctly, and the continuation bet can be a real money maker.

In middle to late position, the tendency to want to play your pairs goes up and up. Some tighter poker players will argue that early on you should fold smallest pairs and wait to play them in position, but as the likelihood you have the best opening hand increases, you should begin to want to put the pressure on.

For this reason, then, when you see a lot of action in front of you preflop, in late position with a medium to small pair, it can be more and more unreasonable to play your hand. If you are one off the button and look down to see pocket sevens, you may begin thinking that you should raise when it arrives. A player raises from second position, and you are now contemplating whether to raise or to just call. Another online poker player to your right raises that opening bet, and now suddenly you’ve got a question on your hands.

A raise can be such a wide range of hands, but a reraise demonstrates a much smaller, more powerful range. Assuming regular conditions (that being, that the opening raiser isn’t so wild that the second raiser might raise a junk hand against him), then likely you are at best a coinflip (the poker online opponent has overs) and often a 6 to 1 dog (he has an overpair). Plus there’s the opener, who if you just call, you have no idea what he’ll do.

Many players, in this spot, then, would say fold, unless you can make a good argument for getting them both to lay down (as in a squeeze play).

Some players would also have you slowplay the rolled up trips for the first few streets while the bets are lower to disguise your hand, while other would argue to get more money in the pot while you can.
